Binaural beats

Two tones, slightly different frequencies, one in each ear. Your brain creates a third tone from the difference. That phantom beat can shift your brainwave state.

Remote viewers have used this technique since the 1970s to reach the mental states where psychic perception works best.

What are binaural beats?

Physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove discovered binaural beats in 1839. Play a 400 Hz tone in the left ear and 410 Hz in the right. The brain doesn't hear two separate tones. It creates a 10 Hz pulse from the difference.

This only works with headphones. Each ear needs to receive its frequency independently. Speakers blend the sounds before they reach you, canceling the effect.

Stereo headphones required. Binaural beats won't work through speakers or mono audio.

Brainwave entrainment

The brain tends to match external rhythms. Flash a light at 10 Hz and brainwave activity shifts toward 10 Hz. Binaural beats create the same effect through sound. Researchers call this frequency following response.

Studies have measured effects on:

  • Anxiety — Theta and alpha beats reduced anxiety in multiple controlled studies
  • Focus — Beta frequency beats improved attention and task performance
  • Meditation — Theta beats helped subjects reach deeper states faster
  • Sleep — Delta frequency beats promoted slower, deeper sleep patterns

Brainwave frequencies

Each frequency range corresponds to a different mental state. Binaural beats target specific ranges to induce those states.

Delta (0.5-4 Hz)

Deep sleep, healing, regeneration. Associated with profound unconscious states.

Theta (4-8 Hz)

Deep meditation, hypnagogic states, creativity, intuition. The target state for remote viewing.

Alpha (8-12 Hz)

Relaxed awareness, light meditation, calm focus. Good for quieting the analytical mind before sessions.

Beta (12-30 Hz)

Normal waking consciousness, active thinking, problem-solving. Can interfere with psychic perception.

Gamma (30-100 Hz)

High-level information processing, insight, peak concentration. Associated with sudden clarity.

Binaural beats and remote viewing

Robert Monroe founded the Monroe Institute in 1974 to study consciousness using audio technology. He developed Hemi-Sync, a binaural beat system, and later worked with the CIA's Stargate Project. Several military remote viewers trained there.

Remote viewing works best in a specific mental state: relaxed but aware, receptive but not asleep. Meditators call this the hypnagogic state, the threshold between waking and dreaming. It corresponds to theta brainwave activity, 4-8 Hz.

How viewers use binaural beats:

  • Before sessions — Alpha beats (8-12 Hz) calm the mind and reduce mental chatter
  • During sessions — Theta beats (4-8 Hz) deepen the receptive state
  • Consistency — Audio cues help establish the same mental state each time

Binaural beats are a tool, not a requirement. Regular practice with blind targets and feedback matters more than any audio technology.

Meditation and altered states

Experienced meditators spend years learning to reach theta states on demand. Binaural beats offer a shortcut. Put on headphones, and the brain follows the frequency within minutes.

The theta state produces vivid imagery, intuitive insights, and a sense of expanded awareness. Meditators describe it as the space where creative ideas emerge and mental boundaries dissolve. Remote viewers describe it as the state where impressions flow without interference from the analytical mind.

Some practitioners use binaural beats for lucid dreaming, out-of-body experiences, or exploring unusual states of consciousness. The same technology that helps remote viewers access psychic information can facilitate other forms of inner exploration.
